Class Opening & Closing Discussion Routines
Course:
Civil Discourse in the Classroom
Anchor Chart
6-12
In this activity, students collaborate to develop a shared set of civil discourse guidelines for their classroom using real-world models as inspiration. They begin by analyzing a Retro Report video of respectful disagreement, identifying the language, behaviors, and norms that support productive dialogue, before engaging in a stations activity to deepen their thinking. Students then evaluate and select the most meaningful guidelines for their class, explaining their reasoning and contributing to a collectively defined framework for respectful, effective discussion.
