Class Opening & Closing Discussion Routines
Course:
Civil Discourse in the Classroom
Anchor Chart
6-12
In this activity, students develop and communicate their understanding of civil discourse by crafting a concise, audience-aware elevator pitch. They begin by defining civil discourse in their own words and explaining its importance, both generally and within their classroom community. Students then draft, share, and revise a 30–60 second pitch that clearly articulates the value of civil discourse to stakeholders like peers or families. Through this process, students strengthen their ability to articulate ideas, consider audience, and advocate for the role of respectful dialogue in a democratic classroom.
